CBD Oil and Weight Loss

Now that CBD has made the rounds, and has been touted as a cure for everything from chronic pain to anxiety, it’s no surprise that people have started looking to it as a weight loss aid. Most people want to drop a few pounds here and there, and everyone has heard their friends telling them how CBD has changed their lives. This begs the question: can you use CBD oil for weight loss? Maybe. The answer is a bit complicated.

Now that marijuana and its derivatives are gaining traction and being legalized around the world, we are finally able to push some funding for research into cannabis and its effects on the human body. For years, the fact that most of the world maintained a laughable relationship with cannabis led to an influx of amateur medicine men and women publishing the results of their weekend experiments, which has given scientists good hypothetical material for studies. This combination of new science and testimonials is finally beginning to give us an idea of how CBD works with our bodies.

What is CBD?

CBD is a compound known as a cannabinoid and is extracted from the cannabis plant. It is not psychoactive like THC, which is the psychoactive cannabinoid found in marijuana. CBD will not make you high. Its effects are tied to the fact that CBD activates receptors in the endocannabinoid system in your body. The endocannabinoid system is thought to be responsible for regulating a wide range of processes, from pain sensation to mood to appetite. This activation of the endocannabinoid system makes CBD interesting to people looking to lose weight.

While taking CBD likely won’t cause you to start dropping weight out of the blue, that doesn’t mean it can’t be a helpful part of your weight loss regimen. CBD tends to work its magic on symptoms rather than causes. For example, it won’t fix your broken leg, but it will help your broken leg hurt a little bit less.

As a pain reliever, it may help you get more out of your workouts. CBD topicals are great for treating localized pain like muscle strains and bruises. Many people have a hard time sticking to exercise routines because aches and pains prevent them from completing their workouts. If pain is a problem for you, CBD may help you stick to your plan.

CBD may also help control your appetite, but there is little scientific evidence to support this claim at the time of this writing. There is evidence to support the fact that CBD stimulates the endocannabinoid system, which regulates appetite to some extent, but the results are mixed. Some people experience increased appetite with CBD, while others report a decrease in appetite. If you are among those whose appetite subsides when using CBD oil, it may help you lower your caloric intake and lose weight. It all comes down to whether or not it works for you.

What evidence does suggest, is that CBD can help activate a process known as “browning”. Basically, this means that CBD has been shown to help convert white fat to brown fat, which is a leaner, less dense type of fat. Increasing the amount of brown fat in your body can help increase your body’s ability to burn fat. If you are looking to get leaner, adding CBD to a healthy diet and exercise may help you achieve your goals.

What form of CBD is right for me?

CBD is available in many forms, and you may wonder which is right for you. You can find CBD in oils, tinctures, topicals, and all types of different CBD edibles. Choosing the right form and dosage can help make the process of dropping the pounds a little easier.

Since you are using CBD for weight loss, you need to decide what you are expecting of it. If you want to use it for pain relief, rubbing a topical or cream on the affected area might be the way to go. If your pain is more of a widespread body ache, oil or edible might be more helpful.

If your objective is to use CBD for appetite control, you can incorporate oils into a healthy diet. If you are handy around the kitchen, you can find CBD infused cooking oils that add a little fat-burning kick to the meals you are already cooking. You can also add oils and tinctures to drinks, creating soothing cocktails that reduce stress and lower cortisol levels in your body.

While there isn’t a ton of research on CBD weight loss results quite yet, adding CBD to your weight loss routine may help boost the effectiveness of steps you are already taking. As with any supplement or new exercise routine, it’s a good idea to check with your doctor beforehand. Make sure you are healthy enough for physical activity, and make sure supplements won’t interfere with any medications you are already taking. When you’re ready to give it a shot, we’ve got lots of resources to help.
